Adaptable Design 

It important to consider the life cycle of a building and design with expansion and contraction in mind. Households numbers will always grow and shrink with time and there are many ways in which the design of a home can embrace these fluctuations. Adaptable design may look like a family home with the ability to be divided into sections that can be rented our or turned into an office or studio. Or an adaptable home may include additional prefabricated sections, that can be sold when a household no longer requires the additional space. There are many intelligent and innovative solutions, that are achievable if we think beyond our traditional housing model.  

Ageing in Place 

Another important factor to consider in adaptable and resilient design is the opportunity to age in place. Designing for disability access, minimal stairs, bathroom and potential bedroom on the ground floor, ability to add grab-rails in the bathroom are all strategies that could ensure that a house can accommodate ageing users.

Climate Resilient Design

We are currently amid a changing climate, which is posing new and greater demands on our buildings to protect and shelter us. When designing a new home or buildings today, we really need to factor in the climatic conditions predicted for the next 50 - 60 years.

When designing and constructing buildings today, we need to factor in increases in temperatures, extreme temperatures, fire risks, droughts, storm surges and sever weather evens.
